Smith: Budget Should Not Jeopardize Health Care Programs
- Washington, D.C. - Oregon Senator Gordon Smith said today proposed cuts to vital health care programs would jeopardize the welfare of Oregon’s senior and vulnerable populations. Senator Smith urged Congress to commit to strengthening the Medicare and Medicaid programs and to improving access to quality health care for the uninsured.
“Good policy should drive the budget, not arbitrary cuts to programs that protect our seniors, our children and the most vulnerable,” Smith said. “Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid start an unwelcomed ripple effect in state budgets and doctors offices. I will work to ensure that our nation’s health care programs remain strong and viable so those in need get the care they deserve. We should strengthen, not bring down the programs that keep America healthy.”
The Senator pledged to continue working with the Oregon delegation to pass an extension of the county payments program, which provides vital economic support to rural counties in 44 states. Several other proposals put forth by the administration were well received. Senator Smith welcomed a budget blue print that made tax relief permanent, continued commitments to increasing timber sales in federal forests and increased funding for construction projects to dredge the Columbia River.
However, funding levels for mental health and children’s health care were met with little enthusiasm.
“I am disappointed that the budget does not properly reflect the need for better access to mental health and children’s health care programs. Budgets are about priorities. The programs that help improve an individual’s mental health or safeguard the welfare and wellbeing of children should not be negotiated in a budget. I believe the broad support in both parties will ensure an increase in funding for these important programs.”
