KOMP NAMED TO SERVE ON NCSL COMMITTEE
REVIEWING NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

State Rep. Betty Komp (D-Woodburn) has been named to a National Conference of State Legislatures task force on Federal Education Policy. The appointment was announced this week by House Speaker Jeff Merkley.

The purpose of the task force is to make recommendations and generate guidelines to help the new President and Congress draft effective K-12 policy that respects the role of states and local school districts in setting local policy, while working on the federal level to encourage all school districts to reach higher education standards.

Rep. Komp, a former school principal and teacher, was one of six new members of the national task force chosen this year. She also serves as vice chair of the House Education Committee and is a member of the Oregon House Democrats’ Leadership Team.

“My passion has always been education,” said Rep. Komp. “Serving on this task force will allow Oregon to have a much stronger voice in the relationship between federal education policy and our state goals to have the best workforce in the nation.”

Rep. Komp said the recommendations will be ready by the time Congress is ready to reconsider the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 2009.

“As a school administrator and a State Representative, I have heard from many districts and many concerned parents about federal laws such as the ‘No Child Left Behind Act.’ Serving on this national task force will allow me to bring Oregon issues and concerns to the forefront of the debate over the federal role in our elementary education system. I am so looking forward to being part of that debate,” said Rep. Komp.
