REP. SPRENGER SEEKS INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR SCHOOL CHOICE
Scio Legislator Attends School Choice Conference in Utah

SALEM— Rep. Sherrie Sprenger (R-Scio) attended the American Legislative Exchange
Council’s 2008 School Choice Academy in Salt Lake City this past weekend. The national
conference gave legislators the latest research on current school choice programs and legislation
from other states.

“While I served on the school board, I really worked to provide positive options for parents for
educating their kids,” Rep. Sprenger said. “Now that I am a legislator, I have the opportunity to
continue this work at the state level. I learned about innovative solutions that can increase
educational opportunities for students in Oregon.”

The conference brought together state legislators and school choice experts to discuss education
reform issues. It included sessions on drafting effective school choice legislation and tackling
obstacles to reform.

“Not every child is the same, and parents need to choose the educational avenues that are right
for their child,” Rep. Sprenger said. “This conference gave me additional tools for building more
effective partnerships throughout education and with parents to develop successful kids.”
Rep. Sprenger’s trip was sponsored by ALEC, and not paid for at taxpayer’s expense. ALEC is a
nonpartisan public-private partnership of America’s state legislators, members of the private
sector, the federal government, and the general public.
