PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Florida’s governor is calling out Oregon for not being tough on crime, claiming that Washington County failed to request the extradition of a man with a warrant for his arrest.

In early March. Florida’s Martin County sheriff made a post on Facebook about a man with warrants for his arrest in Oregon, saying he was going to be released from their custody.

Juan Jose-Sebastian was detained in Florida for a minor offense, and they held him for as long as they could. The sheriff’s office claims they reached out to Washington County officials so they could request to extradite.

But according to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Oregon declined.

Florida officials say they were ready to hand Jose-Sebastian over to Oregon, but the state did not respond quickly enough.

“He was wanted on charges involving rape and sexual abuse in Oregon, and Oregon did not want to accept this individual,” Gov. DeSantis said. “And so the plan was just to release him on the streets of Florida. Well, that is unacceptable. And so we fought back.”

The Washington County’s District Attorney’s Office sent KOIN 6 the following statement:

“We have had no communication with anyone from Florida, including the Florida Governor’s Office and Florida law enforcement….In Oregon, decisions regarding extradition authorization are generally made by the governor’s.”

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek’s Office also responded with a statement saying the Washington County DA requested an extradition warrant for Jose-Sebastian at approximately 12:20 p.m. on March 6 – and the governor’s office approved the extradition warrant 10 minutes later.

“The governor’s office reviews and considers each extradition request on an individual, case-by-case basis,” Gov. Kotek said. “The governor’s office authorized extradition nationwide upon the request, and the extradition process is underway.”

It remains unclear if Jose-Sebastian is currently in Florida or in Oregon.
