Multnomah County has a new transportation director who will oversee road and bridge projects and services, transportation planning and the County Survey Office.

Ian Cannon, who is currently interim County Engineer and also the Sellwood Bridge program manager, has been named County Engineer and Transportation Division Director, according to a late afternoon press release on Tuesday.

"Ian has played a leadership role in the major bridge projects of the last two decades," Kim Peoples, director of the county's Department of Community Services, which includes the Transportation Division, said in the press release. "The next decade will be equally busy as we work to ensure that our roads and bridges meet the community's needs."

The next couple of decades include a near half-billion project to either replace or significantly upgrade the 89-year-old Burnside Bridge to structurally withstand a magnitude-9.0 earthquake. That bridge project is part of a 20-year plan that calls for 52 other projects with an estimated $1.3 billion price tag.

The county has oversight of more than 300 miles of roads in Fairview, Troutdale, Wood Village and rural areas.

Cannon, who will supervise 114 employees, joined the county's Bridge Services team in 1997 and was named manager in 2008. Five years ago, he was given assigned as the lead manager for the $307 million Sellwood Bridge project, one of the most expensive efforts in the county's history.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Washington State University, and a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy from Bowdoin College, according to the news release.
