Oregon considers relaxing hemp cultivation rules

Oregon lawmakers are considering relaxing rules about hemp cultivation.

The Capital Press reports that the House is set to vote on a bill that would allow hemp growers to grow the crop from cuttings and in greenhouses. Under current law, hemp can only be grown from seeds outdoors in fields at least 2.5 acres in size.

When the current law was put in place in 2009, lawmakers enacted the restrictions with the belief that the crop would be used for oilseed and fiber and not for human consumption.

The proposed rules would allow growers to cultivate the crop for cannabidiol, a compound used for medicinal purposes.
