Gov. Kate Brown on Thursday appointed Major Travis Hampton to be superintendent of the Oregon State Police.

Hampton starts his new job July 1.

He replaces retiring Richard Evans Jr., who has served as superintendent since May 23, 2012. Evans has worked for OSP for almost 30 years.

Hampton has been with OSP for 25 years. He started as a cadet and then worked as a trooper in Coos Bay. He was promoted to captain in 2004 and has most recently served as Field Operations Bureau Major and commanding officer for state police patrol, detective, fish & wildlife divisions and special operations.

He has also managed OSP operations for Central and Eastern Oregon.

"Hampton is a dedicated and widely respected law enforcement professional who will ably serve the agency and the people of Oregon during this transition and beyond," Brown said in a news release.

Hampton will serve as acting superintendent pending confirmation by the Senate.
