Portland businessman and philanthropist Earle M. Chiles, who contributed more than $10 million to the University of Portland and was one of the longest-serving members on the university's board, died Thursday. He was 83.

Chiles donated millions of dollars to higher education and medical research as president of the Chiles Foundation. His donations to the University of Portland included $2 million for the university's athletic center.

Chiles served on the university's board of regents since 1975.

"It's a big loss for us. We'll miss his presence on our board," said the Rev. Gerry Olinger, vice president for university relations. "But more personally, we've lost a great friend."

Chiles died after a long illness, the university said in a news release.

At Portland State University, Chiles funded endowed scholarships and professorships. He also made significant contributions to the Portland Providence Medical Center.

Chiles was the chief executive officer of Chiles and Affiliated Companies. He also served on the board of directors of Fred Meyer Inc. His father, Earl A. Chiles, was the stepson of local supermarket founder Fred Meyer.

Chiles was born and raised in Portland. He was a fixture at everything from Timbers games to Oregon Symphony performances.

"It seemed he was connected to just about everyone," Olinger said. "He really wanted to be a part of all aspects of the city."

The University of Portland soccer and basketball teams will wear a patch to honor Chiles in the 2016-2017 season, university spokesperson Beth Sorenson said.

Chiles' funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on July 1 at St. Mary's Cathedral  at 1716 N.W. Davis St. The funeral is open to the public. A luncheon will be held at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus afterward.
