PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Gurrero presented the 2019-2020 budget to the school board Tuesday night.

Despite increased funding from Governor Kate Brown’s proposed $8.9 billion for education funding, PPS will still be running a $17 million deficit.

To fill the gap, Gurrero is proposing staffing cuts that would increase some class sizes.

He is also proposing a 2.5 percent budget reduction to the central office.

There will be two chances for members of the public to comment on the proposed budget. The first is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 at Faubion School.

The second is on May 14 at the PPS central office.
