Hate crime statistics are rising in Oregon; why that’s not the whole story

Data points hate crimes

Judging by the numbers alone, Eugene would appear to be a hotbed of prejudice and bigotry.

Earlier this year, the FBI released its yearly Uniform Crime Report, an annual tally of crimes reported to police in 2020. According to those statistics, Eugene ranked first in the state with 24.3 hate crimes for every 100,000 residents. Tigard came in second with 23.8. Portland, the state’s largest population center, ranked ninth, with just 6.1 hate crimes per 100,000 residents.
