The Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police will be joining forces to stop illegal street racing events scheduled for this weekend, officials said Saturday.
Police said the agencies would work together to enforce a new Portland ordinance aimed at slowing down the city’s sometimes deadly street races.
The new ordinance created more education programs and public outreach around the dangers of street racing. It also imposed stiffer penalties for those with multiple violations. Under the new law, a citation for an unlawful street takeover can result in a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
The ordinance also gives first-time offenders a chance at diversion if they go through an education program.
Police said local and out-of-town street racers plan to attend Saturday and Sunday night events in Portland.
“We remind participants that this illegal activity can result in jail time, fines, and towed vehicles,” officials said in a news release.
Law enforcement officials used the new ordinance to arrest more than a dozen people and tow eight cars in late September.
