Who we are
We are the Taxpayer Association of Oregon (TAO). It was founded by Jason Williams and Don McIntire in the year 2000. Don McIntire is most commonly known as the father of Measure 5 (the 1990 property tax limitation measure) and many other taxpayer activities going back several decades. Jason Williams is best known for working with Oregonians In Action. TAO also has partner organizations and Political Action Committees to assist on various fronts; ballot measures, candidates, education, lobby, and research.
Ways the Taxpayer Association organizations
make a difference
Oregon’s top Political Website: Our popular website, OregonWatchdog.com, is now ranked at the top of web searches involving ‘Oregon political news’ keywords.
Great Ballot Measures: As co-chief petitioner to the tax referendum drive, TAO helped stop Kulongoski’s $1 Billion tax increase by referring it to the voters – Measure 30. Measure 30 was defeated as a resounding victory for taxpayers. . The Multnomah County Tax Repeal petition, we gathered 23,000 signatures in less than two months. We also helped Measure 37 gather their first 5,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Government Waste Watch Reports: TAO has become the official headquarters for government waste in Oregon as sought by legislators, students, taxpayers, radio talk show hosts, activists and journalists. By distributing 10,000 of these reports, we get these ideas into the bloodstream of Oregon politics. Check out our Government Waste Center here
Lobby for Limited Government: In addition to a taxpayer agenda (see government efficiency Act). TAO fills a role by fighting for issues that have no lobby like fighting small fee increases, initiative rights, and privatization efforts.
Taxpayer Protection Pledge: We recruit candidates to sign the state Taxpayer Protection Pledge and the National Protection Pledge to oppose any new tax increases. Nearly 20 Oregon candidates signed the pledge. 1300 lawmakers have signed the pledge nationwide. See the pledge project here
Election Reform: We train volunteers for poll watching and monitoring ballot processing. TAO is also the source for filing electioneering complaints against government agencies using taxpayer resources to help candidates and measures.

- State’s Largest Voters Guide: Our taxpayer Voters Guide issued 115 endorsements including often ignored races like city council, mayor & judges! Our Primary and General election Voter Guide takes sides on more races than any known political organization in Oregon.
- Voter Scorecard: Voting records locks politicians to their votes. Many candidates use our scorecard in mailers attacking their tax-and-spend opponent. We have publicized politicians voting records going back to 1997 on the web.
